Why new movers matter

  • 11.8% of Americans moved to a different home in 2024, about one in eight. Most stayed in the same state, so the movers you want are already nearby. U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024
  • In the first year after closing, buyers of new homes spend $21,306 on appliances, furnishings, and property alterations, four times what non-moving owners spend. How the count works

  • Three separate signals are observed by destination ZIP code: a home listed for sale, a home under contract, and a person who finished a move in. They are not one group of people moving through steps, so the three counts do not add up or flow into each other.
  • Each count covers the last 30, 90, or 365 days, counted back from the last day the source observed. The footer states the observed date range and when the file was prepared.
  • This page ships one count per ZIP code and period, computed ahead of time. Zero stays zero, counts under ten are withheld, and everything else is rounded to the nearest ten. No person-level data is on this page.
  • The ZIP codes you type never leave your browser. The page looks them up in a file that ships with it and makes no network calls.
